48 Hours in Abu Dhabi (2026): The Perfect Weekend Itinerary

Two full days in Abu Dhabi, hour by hour: Friday at the Grand Mosque and the Corniche, Saturday at the Louvre and Saadiyat beach. Where to stay, where to eat, what to skip.

Why 48 Hours in Abu Dhabi Beats a Day Trip from Dubai

Most visitors to the UAE treat Abu Dhabi as a day trip from Dubai, drive down for the Grand Mosque, and drive back. That is a mistake. Abu Dhabi is a different city from Dubai — quieter, more focused, more architecturally ambitious in its public buildings — and it deserves its own 48 hours. The itinerary below is the one we would send a friend on, and it covers the two experiences that define Abu Dhabi (the Grand Mosque and the Saadiyat cultural cluster) plus the Corniche and the meals that earn their place.

For the deeper context, see our best restaurants in Abu Dhabi guide, our where to stay in Abu Dhabi guide, and our best luxury hotels in Abu Dhabi list.

Where to Stay for This Itinerary

Stay at the Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Abu Dhabi on the Corniche if you can stretch to it — the palace experience is part of the Abu Dhabi story. If not, stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Al Maryah Island for the business-district location and the lower price point. Both put you within 15 minutes of the Grand Mosque and the Corniche, which is the foundation of Day 1.

Day 1 — Friday: The Grand Mosque and the Corniche

8:30am — Breakfast at the hotel. The Emirates Palace breakfast buffet is the most comprehensive in the UAE — allow 75 minutes and eat at the Levendou room. If you are at the Four Seasons, the breakfast is in the Café Lounge and is excellent but smaller.

10:00am — Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Take a hotel taxi to the Grand Mosque (15 minutes from Emirates Palace, AED 35). The mosque is the single most impressive public building in the UAE and one of the most impressive mosques in the world. Free entry, open 9am-10pm daily except Friday morning (reopens 4pm Friday). Allow 90 minutes. Modest dress required — women are loaned an abaya at the entrance, men cannot wear shorts. Photograph the reflection pool from the main prayer hall entrance — it is the photograph most visitors miss.

12:30pm — Corniche walk and lunch. Take a taxi from the mosque to the Corniche (10 minutes, AED 25). Walk the western end of the promenade (45 minutes, 2.5km, free) — the Corniche is the most pleasant walk in Abu Dhabi and the only part of the city that genuinely functions as a walkable neighbourhood. Lunch at a Corniche cafe (AED 200-280 for two).

2:30pm — Marina Mall and the Observation Deck. Walk to Marina Mall Abu Dhabi at the Corniche eastern end (15 minutes). The Observation Deck at 300 (AED 95 per person, includes a AED 50 café voucher) is the 74th-floor viewing platform and the best view of Abu Dhabi island. Allow 60 minutes including the elevator.

4:00pm — Rest at the hotel. Two hours back at Emirates Palace or Four Seasons. Use the pool, take a nap, reset.

6:30pm — Sunset at the Corniche. Walk the Corniche again for sunset (the light is different at 6pm than at 1pm) or take a hotel taxi to the Emirates Palace private beach for the sunset view (free for hotel guests).

8:00pm — Dinner at COYA Abu Dhabi. Take a taxi to COYA Abu Dhabi for Peruvian dinner (AED 720-880 for two, book 5-7 days ahead). COYA is the table that best captures what Abu Dhabi dining is in 2026 — confident, original, and not trying to be Dubai.

10:30pm — Nightcap at the Emirates Palace lobby. The Emirates Palace lobby bar is the most architecturally dramatic drinking room in the UAE. AED 120-180 per cocktail.

Day 2 — Saturday: Saadiyat and the Louvre

9:00am — Breakfast at the hotel.

10:30am — Louvre Abu Dhabi. Take a taxi to Saadiyat Island (15-20 minutes from the Corniche, AED 50-60). The Louvre Abu Dhabi is the most architecturally significant museum in the UAE — the Jean Nouvel-designed dome creates a “rain of light” effect that is genuinely extraordinary. Permanent collection + temporary exhibitions: AED 65 per adult. Allow 2.5-3 hours. Book online 1-2 days ahead to skip the ticket queue.

1:30pm — Lunch at Jones the Grocer Yas Island. Take a taxi from the Louvre to Jones the Grocer Yas Island on neighbouring Yas Island (20 minutes, AED 60). The all-day breakfast (AED 88) is the order; the deli counter is the secondary reason. Walk-in; arrive before 12:30pm on Saturday or queue 20-30 minutes.

3:00pm — Saadiyat Beach. Take a taxi back to Saadiyat (20 minutes, AED 60). The 9km public beach is the best city-adjacent beach in the UAE. Public beach access is AED 25 per person; the Saadiyat Beach Club day pass is AED 350 per person and includes pool, towels, and showers. Allow 2.5-3 hours.

6:00pm — Sunset at Saadiyat. The Saadiyat sunset is the best in Abu Dhabi — the beach faces west and the sun drops into the Gulf. Stay on the beach or at the Beach Club until 6:30pm.

7:30pm — Dinner at the St. Regis Saadiyat Mediterranean. Walk or taxi to The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort Abu Dhabi (5 minutes by taxi, 10 minutes by foot). Book the Mediterranean restaurant for 7:30pm (5-7 days ahead, AED 780-1,100 for two) and order the seafood platter for two. The beachside terrace is the most romantic dinner table in Abu Dhabi.

10:30pm — Taxi back to the hotel. 25 minutes, AED 60-80.

What to Skip on a 48-Hour Trip

Skip Yas Island entirely unless you have a third day — the theme parks (Ferrari World, Warner Bros World) deserve a full day each and the 25-minute drive each way eats into a 48-hour itinerary. Skip the Heritage Village — a small, dated reconstruction that is not worth the taxi. Skip the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital — worthwhile for a 5-day trip but a 3-hour commitment including transit for a 90-minute tour. Skip the Corniche Beach Park on a Friday — it is overrun with families and the Saadiyat public beach is quieter.

Do not skip: the Grand Mosque (the single most impressive building in the UAE), the Louvre (the most architecturally significant museum in the region), and the Saadiyat sunset (the best in Abu Dhabi).

Mistakes to Avoid

First, treating Abu Dhabi as a day trip from Dubai — the 90-minute drive each way eats 3 hours and you will see only the Grand Mosque before turning around. Stay overnight. Second, booking the Grand Mosque for Friday morning — the mosque is closed to non-Muslims Friday morning for prayers; reopens 4pm. Third, wearing shorts to the Grand Mosque — men and women both must cover knees and shoulders; women are loaned an abaya, men are turned away if in shorts. Fourth, skipping the Louvre because “it is a branch of the Paris Louvre” — it is not; it is an independent museum with its own collection and a building that justifies the visit on its own.

A fifth mistake: not renting a car. Abu Dhabi is more spread out than Dubai, and taxis add up — AED 300-500 per day for a 48-hour itinerary. Renting at Abu Dhabi airport costs AED 120-180 per day and pays for itself by day one.

What This Itinerary Costs

For two people, 2 nights: hotel AED 3,000-5,000 (2 nights at Emirates Palace or Four Seasons), meals AED 2,400-3,200 (6 meals), activities AED 600-900 (Louvre, Observation Deck, Beach Club, Grand Mosque is free), taxis AED 350-500 (or rental car AED 240-360). Total: AED 6,350-9,600 for two, all-in. Book 2-3 weeks ahead for the best rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 48 hours enough for Abu Dhabi? For a first trip, yes — this itinerary covers the Grand Mosque, the Louvre, the Corniche, and Saadiyat beach. A third day lets you add Yas Island (Ferrari World or Warner Bros World).

What is the best season for this itinerary? October-April. May-September is too hot for the Corniche walk and Saadiyat beach; shift those to early morning.

Do I need a visa? Most nationalities get a 30-day visa on arrival at Abu Dhabi airport. Check before booking.

Can I drink alcohol throughout? Yes, at all hotel restaurants and bars. ID proving 21+ required. The Grand Mosque is alcohol-free, obviously.

How do I combine Abu Dhabi with Dubai? 90 minutes by car along Sheikh Zayed Road (E11). A 5-day UAE trip can do 3 days Dubai + 2 days Abu Dhabi, or 2 days Dubai + 3 days Abu Dhabi. See our 48 hours in Dubai itinerary for the Dubai side.
